<span style="color: #505050; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">Our Third Annual Benefit and Silent Auction was a true success!
We raised over $10,000 on June 13! Plus, we signed up volunteers for our Fourth
of July event on the Island and had a great time! Many thanks to the businesses
that generously contributed items for raffles and auction and congrats to the
high bidders. Plus, we appreciate you - our donors and members - who protect
the tradition of Masonboro Island. Without your commitment we would not be able
to do the good work we do.

<span style="color: #505050; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">A small part of the money we raised will go towards our efforts
on the Fourth of July. This year will mark the fourth year that Masonboro.Org
will be on the island -- working to keep it clean on the most populated
day of the year. Last year, over 70 Masonboro.org volunteers handed out trash
bags and talked to the island’s visitors. We spread the word about New Hanover
County’s most precious resource and encouraged the old Scout motto: <span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">leave a
place a little better than you found it. In 2012 we did just that.
We removed and recycled over 4,000 lbs. of trash.
<span style="color: #505050; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;"><span style="color: #505050; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 9.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">

If you'd like to be a part of the effort on the Fourth of July, please CLICK HERE to volunteer.
There are three shifts to choose from and a variety of roles to fill! Plus, <span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">MARK YOUR
CALENDAR! On Monday, July 1, we'll have a volunteer fire
drill and cook-out at the Johnson's home. We'll serve up burgers and dogs
and provide tea and water. Bring a friend, your favorite adult beverages and
a side dish to share. At 6pm we will have a short talk about our volunteer
needs and preview the plans for the Fourth. Mostly, we will spend the time
sharing memories and getting to know others who share the same love for
Masonboro that you do.
clean today insures that our families can enjoy their own traditions tomorrow.
With the support of members like you, we will keep Masonboro Island clean and
open.

As 2012 draws to a close, I want to thank you again for your support of Masonboro.org, share some big news and give you a peek into 2013. We would not have made it through 2012 without you. You have supported us by volunteering or donating throughout the year. Our May fundraiser was a success and our efforts on the Fourth of July made a mark!

In 2013, our aim is to protect the traditions of Masonboro Island. Many of us grew up on the sands of islands - camping, surfing, fishing. Others of us spend our time there now - boating, walking, shell-hunting, throwing the ball for our dogs. We all want to make sure the traditional uses of Masonboro Island are passed on to our families and friends.

Our theme for 2013 is summed up by keeping the Masonboro tradition alive. In the next few months, you'll hear from several board members and the community about their own traditions on Masonboro Island. If you have a story to tell, or camp-fire joke or a favorite memory of Masonboro, we want to know! Please CLICK HERE to submit your memory via email, or call Beth Andrew at 910.233.4041 to share your tradition.

Finally, we ask that you please remember MASONBORO.ORG in your year-end giving. We have created a way to donate online through PAYPAL. We will steward your donation like we steward the island. CLICK HERE to make a donation today.

Even though it is only the second week of July, I feel like Masonboro.org has already had a big summer. It all started on June 2nd with a cook-out for volunteers. On June 24th,
Buddy's Crab Shack & Oyster Bar held a fund-raiser for us that
raised over $2,300.00. Finally, last week we had a fire drill/dress
rehearsal cook-out on Monday and on Wednesday, we had our third annual
July 4th, Masonboro Island clean-up. It was our most organized effort to date.

This year was one of those
you-had-to-be-there-to-believe-it events. The crowd was larger and more
unruly then in years past. At the end of the day fights broke out
(straining the ability of the five police officers on-site) and more
kids were stranded without rides.

Despite the challenges, our volunteers performed
flawlessly. The first shift handed out trash bags and talked to the kids
about the importance of keeping the island clean. It is amazing how
receptive they are to our message. Next year, I think we should spend
more time talking to the kids about their responsibilities.

The second shift (12-4) is the "love" shift. At this
point the party is in high gear and the kids are beginning to feel no
pain. It is during these hours that our volunteers hear "I love what you
guys are doing" more times then we can count. No really, "I love you
guys!".

This year the third shift (4-8) was the one that left
us all scratching our heads. At the end of the day pretty much anything
you might see at a drunken college tailgate party was happening on
Masonboro. In years past, people started leaving around 4:00 in the
afternoon. Not so this year. At 6:00pm, there was still a large crowd
left on the island. At that point we swooped in and within an hour we
had most of the trash off the island. One big negative happened this
year when a couple of kids chastised us for not giving people rides off

Now that it is all over, I want to thank everyone who
volunteered. Without your efforts Masonboro Island would have been
trashed. I also want to thank our board members. They are the reason we
were so well organized this year. Over 40 businesses also contributed to
our success this year. While there are too many to mention, I have to
give a shout out to Waste Management. For three years they have handled all of the recycling and trash we have taken off the island.

Finally, I want thank you......our members. By joining
Masonboro.org us you have made our efforts to keep Masonboro Island open
to the public, a much louder voice.

Thanks to the folks who helped us canvas Masonboro users last summer! Especially our two star “surveystresses”: Dawn Hoback and Phyllis Bayzle! You gals were awesome!

Here
is a summary of the responses we got from 80 folks. Since this is not
really a scientific survey by any stretch, we feel okay in asserting
that these 80 responses are really representative of a larger grouping.
Generally we were talking with one person in a group of 3 or 4 folks who
were all nodding their heads yes! So, this survey could represent as
many as 200 or 300 folks. The results were interesting, but not
unexpected (at least to me):

Most respondents are from New Hanover county

Most go to MSB 1-2 times a month

More offseason trips than I expected to see

Most folks have been going for more than 5 years

Masonboro is VERY IMPORTANT to 81%

About half (who own a dog) bring a dog often; about half of those let the dog run

Only 35% know Coastal Reserve manages Masonboro

Only 10% support ban on alchohol

56% were above the age of 40

If you have visited Masonboro during the summer months you have likely seen a nest site that has been marked with a sign and perhaps a protective screen over the site. Interestingly enough, the Coastal Reserve stopped using surveyor tape to delineate the nest sites because there was speculation that tape attracted predators. Identifying these sites early is critical to helping more eggs end up as baby turtles swimming in the ocean rather than breakfast for hungry foxes that also patrol the beach.

That is where Masonboro.org came in last summer… A number of Masonboro.org members attended a turtle volunteer orientation and workshop last spring at the UNCW Center for Marine Science. The turtle program was headed up by Heather Stoker, a recently graduated grad student from UNCW, and Hope Sutton of the Coastal Reserve. The turtle folks would be walking the entire length of Masonboro every day from late-May through mid-August. It became clear at that meeting that the Coastal Reserve needed help getting the UNCW interns and volunteers to the island. Masonboro.org asked them which day was the hardest to man, and Sunday became our day to ferry folks to and from the island. It was the first year the Coastal Reserve patrolled the entire island every day. Hope Sutton said, “Our three interns logged over 270 miles each during the summer.” Quite impressive.

Every Sunday at 5:30am a Masonboro.org boat captain met the UNCW intern and volunteers at Trails End Rd. and took them to (usually) the north end of Masonboro. The boat captain would then wait to receive a phone call from the volunteer (anywhere from 8:00-11:00) and head to Carolina Beach inlet to pick them up. Jeff Tysinger headed up this effort for Masonboro.org and said, “I really enjoyed dropping them off and heading down to Carolina Beach inlet where I just waited and sometimes fished until they were done. It was the best time of day because it was so peaceful and quiet.” If you think you might like to help ferry turtle folks during the 2012 season, Hope will be conductingrequired boat safety inspections on June 2, from 3-6pm at the UNCW Center for Marine Science.

In addition to identifying and protecting nests, 2011 was the second year that the Reserve had collected DNA material from egg shells to help with a University of Georgia study to determine patterns of where specific turtles lay their eggs year after year. This study covers NC, SC, and GA. Pretty cool… The goal of the volunteers was to get to the nests before the foxes did. Nearly every nest (96%) had been predated to some degree by foxes during the summer of 2010 before the volunteers could get there. In order to protect more nests during 2011, occasionally the UNCW interns would use a specially designed bicycle to patrol the beach more quickly. One of these bicycles was provided by Masonboro.org.

2011 produced 38 nests on Masonboro compared to 24 in 2010. Only 58% showed signs of some predation, but 10 were wiped out by hurricane Irene. Hopefully through continued efforts on the part of the Coastal Reserve, UNCW, and Masonboro.org, the success rate for turtle hatchlings will continue to rise. Please contact Masonboro.org if you have interest in becoming a volunteer to identify nests or helping with the ferrying effort in 2012!

We'll celebrate last year's volunteers and welcome new ones at a June 2 cook-out at the Johnson's home at 4:30pm. You'll get a sneak peek at our plan to cover the holiday celebration and get a chance to sign-up for key volunteer positions that night!

This year we are looking to include even more of the community in our efforts. Our efforts and our presence over the last two years have helped keep Masonboro free of any new rules that effect public access. We volunteer to see Masonboro stay open. We volunteer because we want our kids and grandkids to enjoy Masonboro like we always have.

If you feel the same way, please join us on June 2. We'll serve up burgers and dogs and provide tea and water. Bring a friend, your favorite adult beverages and a side dish to share. At 6pm we will have a short talk about our volunteer needs during the Fourth.
